Video transcript

For centuries, William Shakespeare's work has been celebrated and performed around the world. From A Midsummer Night's Dream to Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's plays have inspired a timeless appreciation for theatre across generations.

But too often barriers in theatres prevent people with disabilities from experiencing Shakespeare on stage. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is passionate about making sure everyone has the chance to be in the audience.

Stratford boasts four theatres that allow people of all abilities to enjoy the shows.

The Festival Theatre, the main venue for performances, was renovated in 2007. The festival seized the opportunity to incorporate accessibility into the construction plans.

Accessible features can assist someone from the moment they arrive for a performance, including:

  • accessible parking at the entrance of the theatre
  • automatic door openers
  • barrier-free box office
  • accessible washrooms and elevators
  • hearing assistive devices for performances
  • Braille programs
  • accessible seats in good locations
  • accessible bus travel from Toronto and Kitchener on selected dates at an affordable price
  • helpful staff who have been trained to assist patrons with all levels of ability

In addition, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival produces a performance interpreted in sign language every other year.

"We want to be welcoming to everyone," said Ann Swerdfager, media manager with the festival. "Stratford Shakespeare Festival is about enriching lives and bringing a message to a wider audience."

Shakespeare's plays have been brought to life at the festival since 1953. Each year between April and November, the festival offers up to 16 plays, with a variety of Shakespeare and other classical pieces on its playbill.

More than 500,000 people attend the Stratford Shakespeare Festival each year. And, thanks to the festival's commitment to breaking down barriers, people with disabilities can enjoy time-honoured performances in a world-class setting.
