Transcript

The Family Responsibility Office (FRO) collects, distributes and enforces child and spousal support payments.

FRO helps families in Ontario get the support payments they are entitled to by enforcing court-ordered support responsibilities. We work to flow payments from the person who pays the support (the payor) to the person who receives it (the recipient).

What we don’t do

The Family Responsibility Office is not involved in:

  • motions to change
  • issues relating to custody/access, or
  • other entitlement issues.

If a payor does not meet their support responsibilities, FRO has the legal authority and responsibility to take enforcement action to recover the money owed.

We are mandated through the following legislation:

Family Responsibility and Support Arrears Enforcement Act, 1996

This Act gives us the authority to enforce:

  • Support Orders
  • Support Deduction Orders, and
  • Domestic Contracts filed with the court.

The Interjurisdictional Support Orders Act, 2002

This Act allows us to enforce child and spousal support payments when one party lives outside of Ontario.

FRO has enforcement agreements with every Canadian province and territory, every state in the United States of America, as well as 31 countries. If one party lives in one of these areas, you can usually get, change or enforce a support order.
