Services for Aboriginal women and children
Through the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy, the Ontario government funds seven on-reserve shelters. Additionally, through its Violence Against Women (VAW) shelter program, the ministry funds some shelters that provide culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal women and their children.
The Assaulted Women’s Helpline has paid special attention to the needs of Aboriginal women and has consulted with Aboriginal women’s groups to ensure that abused women receive culturally sensitive services. The Assaulted Women’s Helpline provides interpretation in 17 of the Aboriginal languages spoken in North America.
