- The Family Responsibility Office (FRO) can send money to recipients only after it has received a payment from either the payor or the payor's income source. Once FRO receives a payment, it can deposit the funds to the recipient's bank account, usually within 24-48 hours.
- If you disagree with the amount set out in your court order, you may have to go back to court. To change a domestic contract that is filed with the court, both the payor and recipient need to agree to the change. The FRO is not authorized to make changes to support orders. You may wish to seek legal advice.
Your local family court can also provide more information. Some Ontario courts have Family Law Information Centres that can assist you. For the location of the family court in your community, look in the Blue Pages of your telephone directory under "courts" in the "Index-Government Listings".
- If a payor and recipient disagree on when the responsibility to pay support ends, they may need to go back to court. The FRO is not authorized to decide this matter.
- The law requires the FRO to be neutral in any dispute between a payor and a recipient over the support responsibility. Consequently, the FRO does not give legal advice to or represent either client.
- Please note that the FRO only enforces those provisions of an order or agreement dealing with support. FRO does not become involved in child custody or access issues.
- If you require a statement of the payments that our Office has either received from you or your income source, or has sent to you, please contact our office at 1-888-815-2757 (call 416 243-1909 in the Greater Toronto Area). It is important for payors and recipients to keep their own records of support payments received or paid.
