The Ontario government is expanding the range of housing options and supports that will give adults with a developmental disability more choice and control over their lives. The McGuinty government is providing $14 million in capital and $10.3 million in operating funding to create 178 new living spaces across the province. This investment will fund 44 projects led by community agencies.
The new spaces will address the needs of adults with a developmental disability whose parents are aging, those leaving the child welfare system and adults with changing and multiple special needs.
People will have the opportunity to live in group homes, houses or apartment buildings that are safe and affordable. Additionally, they will get the appropriate supports they need to take part in community living activities and live with dignity. They may live alone or with others. The major benefit is that people will have housing with the supports they need.
Local agencies will create and manage the new places to live in 27 communities, which were selected based on the needs of the people living there, and on the capacity of the communities to provide the services required to support people. The new places to live will be developed in the following communities:
