In response to the recommendations of the review of the Oaklands Regional Centre and the report of the independent manager, staff and management at Oaklands have already implemented a number of improvements:
- In terms of physical setting, work began last December on upgrading and installing new security equipment that will meet the recommendations of the reviewer.
- In early December, a number of steps were immediately implemented. This included upgrades to the security system, providing two walkie-talkies in each house, allowing greater flexibility for staff in each house to communicate more effectively, providing cell phones for client outings, and hiring an additional manager to be on site overnight.
- Staff training has also been increased.
- Oaklands is hiring five part-time front-line staff to strengthen the staffing in each house, an additional designated-manager-in-charge position to support residential managers, and a full-time human resources position to support staff supervision and performance management.
