People with a developmental disability in the York Region will soon be able to benefit from new supportive housing.

Reena – a community agency that provides residential supports – is using $2 million in Ontario funding for a new housing development project. The project includes 60 supportive housing units for people with a variety of special needs in York Region.  Thirty-six spaces are for people with a developmental disability.

These funds are part of a $7.6-million province-wide investment in agencies serving people with a developmental disability.  These investments will help agencies assist more people while improving accessibility, safety and security.

QUOTES

“It’s important for people with a developmental disability to live in their own community in a place that meets their needs,” said Minister of Community and Social Services Madeleine Meilleur.  “More housing here in York Region means better support for them, close to home.”

“York Region is a rapidly growing community,” said Chief Executive Officer of Reena Sandy Keshen.  “That means the need for services for people with disabilities, the frail and the elderly are also growing.”

QUICK FACTS

  • Ontario is home to approximately 38 per cent of people in Canada with a developmental disability.
  • Reena assists approximately 1,000 people with a developmental disability through a variety of programs and services.
