RESIDENTIAL SUPPORTS

The Ministry of Community and Social Services funds community agencies that provide a range of residential options.  Individuals and their families may identify the type of supports that best suit their needs and consider applying for specific residential supports.  Options range from group homes and supported independent living to specialized accommodation for individuals with a developmental disability who also have a mental health issue and/or challenging behaviour.

The Familyhome program is another option. Supports are provided by a Familyhome provider in a family setting (similar to foster care for children) for those individuals who may require supervision, prefer living with a family, and who may need the additional support that a family environment can provide.  Children and adults with a range of functional abilities, including those who have additional physical, behavioural, and/or medical complications, may find they are best supported in the Familyhome program.

For more information about this program, please see the publication entitled Familyhome Guidelines.

If you would like information about residential options in your community, please contact the Ministry of Community and Social Services regional office nearest you. Ask to speak with someone in the developmental services unit.  They can provide you with information about how to access residential supports in your community.
