HELP TO PAY FOR NECESSARY HOME REPAIRS

If you are receiving Ontario Disability Support Program Income Support, you may be able to get help to pay for necessary home repairs so that you and your family can continue to live in your home.

Here are some examples of necessary home repairs:

  • emergency plumbing repairs
  • roof patching because the roof leaks
  • damage caused by disasters, such as fire or flooding
  • a damaged door that makes your home unsafe to live in
  • work that an expert says is critical (for example, a utility company inspector says that your furnace is unsafe).

The home repair benefit is available only if you cannot get help from any other program or source, such as:

  • your home insurance policy
  • Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program for Persons with Disabilities (Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation)
  • Home and Vehicle Modification Program (Ontario March of Dimes)
  • Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing).

If you need modifications to your home because of your disability, you may be able to get help from the Home and Vehicle Modification Program. This program is administered by the Ontario March of Dimes. You don’t need to be receiving Ontario Disability Support Program Income Support to get help from the Home and Vehicle Modification Program.

How do I get this benefit?

The Home Repairs benefit is only available if you cannot get help from any other program or source.

If there is no other source of funding available, you still need approval from your local Ontario Disability Support Program office before you proceed with the home repair. If you did not have time to get prior approval, you may be reimbursed for the home repair if you can prove that the repair was an emergency or unavoidable.

Your Ontario Disability Support Program worker can tell you what information you will need to provide to apply for the benefit. After we have reviewed your information, we will send you a letter to tell you if you have been approved.
