On June 1, 1998 a new social assistance appeal tribunal was created called the Social Benefits Tribunal. The tribunal will eventually replace the Social Assistance Review Board. This tribunal is a quasi-judicial tribunal that reviews decisions relating to social assistance in the province of Ontario. The tribunal has jurisdiction to hear appeals regarding the refusal to grant a benefit, the suspension or cancellation of a benefit, the reduction of a benefit or the amount of a benefit as set out in the Ontario Works Act, 1997 and the Ontario Disability Support Plan Act, 1997. Hearings are held throughout the province and are usually conducted by single member panels.
