The Ontario Works Act, 1997 provides temporary financial assistance to those most in need who meet the criteria in the Act. The Minister has the power to designate geographic areas in Ontario and to designate a municipality, band or prescribed board for each geographic area to administer and provide assistance in that area. The Act also establishes the Social Benefits Tribunal.
