ABOUT THE NEW ACCESSIBLE PARKING PERMIT PROGRAM

In keeping with maintaining an open, accessible, and inclusive Ontario, the Government of Ontario has made, in consultation with stakeholders, organizations and communities representing people with disabilities, the medical profession and law enforcement, a number of changes to the Disabled Person Parking Permit program. As of January 16, 2006, the date on which these changes went into effect, the program was renamed the Accessible Parking Permit program.

Individuals who display the Accessible Parking Permit in their vehicle are entitled to park in a designated disabled parking space. Holders of valid Disabled Person Parking Permit may continue to use their existing permit until it expires.

The new Accessible Parking Permit program initiative supports intent of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005  and the government’s commitment to making Ontario a fully accessible province by 2025 for those living with disabilities.
