History of Developmental Services

By the end of the 1960s, society was becoming less comfortable with the stigma associated with the term "mentally retarded". Beginning in the 1970s there was increasing pressure to begin to use other terms. People who were labelled "mentally retarded" began to speak out about how hurtful the term was to them.

Gradually, the terms "developmentally handicapped" and "developmentally disabled" were coming into use. The term "intellectual disability" was also introduced.

It was also during this period that the "institutions" gradually began to be called "facilities".
