Special Services At Home: Providing Choice For Families Caring For A Loved One At Home

As part of its commitment to transform the developmental services system in Ontario, the provincial government continues to make strategic investments to support families providing personal development and relief support to children and adults with a developmental disability and children with a physical disability.

Currently, the government provides more than $95 million in Special Services At Home (SSAH) to assist close to 27,000 individuals and families. This year's additional $3 million investment in SSAH will help an estimated 400 more individuals and families, and work to maintain zero waitlists across the province.

By providing funding directly to individuals and their families to purchase services and supports, SSAH enables individuals with disabilities to live at home with their families. SSAH funds services such as respite and/or personal development and growth. It does not fund supports for activities that are already provided by, or available from, a community agency.

Residential Supports: Building More Inclusive Communities

The 2007 Ontario Budget is providing $6 million to help people with a developmental disability to live independently in the community.

This operating funding will support the creation of more than 70 new community spaces for individuals on community residential support wait lists. This new funding would:

  • Create opportunities and remove barriers to regional and agency innovation;
  • Support innovative direct funding residential partnerships between agencies and families;
  • Promote accountability in existing and new models of support; and
  • Create a provincial review group to review new models prior to funding.

A capital investment of $2 million will build and renovate spaces.
